The City of Fort Lauderdale has been ranked as one of the top places to live in the country. With 7 miles (11 km) of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, the city also includes 165 miles of waterways. The city features Intracoastal and beach front homes with deep water docks and spectacular views of the water. Real estate in the city includes million dollar homes and a range of architectural styles, from spacious ranch style houses to Mediterranean designs and luxurious contemporary homes.

A major nautical city, there are about 100 marinas with more than 40,000 yachts in Fort Lauderdale. In addition, numerous cruise ships dock in Fort Lauderdale at Port Everglades, one of the most active cruise ports in the country. The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is also located in southeastern part of the city, providing convenience for residents who travel frequently.

Known for its beaches, bars, nightclubs, there are also thousands of restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. The city has more than a hundred nightclubs and 60 golf courses. The downtown Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District on Las Olas Boulevard is a prime south Florida attraction for shopping, dining, nightclubs, bars and other entertainment options. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is nearby, as is the Florida Grand Opera and several museums. Major concerts and performances are held in the city year round, in addition to large signature events such as the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The county seat of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale is located just 28 miles north of Miami. With the largest downtown area in the county, the city is a hub for major corporations and financial institutions. The downtown skyline includes the office buildings of the Central Business District as well as luxury high-rise condominium developments. There are also nine institutions of higher learning with campuses in the city.

There are nearly 300 parks and campsites in Fort Lauderdale. The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department offers programs and activities at area parks, such as Dolphin Isles, Ann Herman Park and Bayview Park. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a 180-acre (0.73 km2) park along the beach with nature trails, camping and picnicking areas, and canoes.

The City of Fort Lauderdale has a total area of 38.6 square miles (99.9 km2), with 34.7 square miles (90.0 km2) of land and 3.8 square miles (9.9 km2) of water. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 165,521. A portion of the population is seasonal, residing in the area from winter until springtime. Adjacent municipalities include Dania Beach, Davie, Hollywood, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Sea Ranch Lakes and Wilton Manors.
